A Healthy Fit With Pure Protein
Proteins are crucial parts of all organisms. They are involved in almost all the processes that cells are involved in. Chemically they are organic compounds formed by amino acids. They are derived in the stomach during digestion. They are critical for metabolism. The source of energy, calories, comes mainly from protein, fat and carbohydrates. Dietary sources of protein include meats, eggs, nuts, grains, legumes, and dairy products such as milk and cheese. Proteins are broken down from the tissues continuously by the body. Enzymes break down proteins during digestion in the stomach. It is estimated that men need 56 grams of protein per day and women need 46 grams of protein per day. Protein consumption below this limit leads to protein deficiency.
Protein deficiency causes a number of health problems and may prove to be fatal. Kwashiorkor is a protein deficiency disease. It expresses itself with symptoms as diarrhea, apathy, fatty liver, failure to grow, edema of the legs and belly, flaky skin, and inactivity. Mental retardation is also known to be caused by protein deficiency. Poor people who face chronic hunger and nutritional deficiency are known to be the most susceptible. Those who are dieting and are on crash diet for weight loss also may face protein deficiency at times. Older people could develop protein deficiency when they do not have a balanced diet. A similar situation might also occur in people who are recovering from surgery, trauma or illness. The deficiency can be offset by the intake of protein rich food or special diet.
Dietary supplements are a growing business in health business. They contain carbohydrates, proteins, fat, minerals and vitamins. The main source of protein in these products is soy, casein and whey. Flavors are added for taste. They come in the form of energy drinks and energy bars. There are energy bars which have protein as the main ingredient.
